10 years ago, after a lot of frustrating attempts to support my parents' corrupted windows systems, I switched them to Ubuntu. It took some getting used to for them, but they eventually got it and appreciated the easy and transparent update processes, the lack of malware, pop-ups, and "purchase me" notices. At this point, I don't think they'd even recognize what to do with windows 10. Their last windows experiences were on XP.

In my 35+ years of being a geek/sysadmin in industrial and academic scientific R&D, I unfortunately was required to deal occasionally with #Microsoft #Windows, everything from DOS 3 to #Windows #NT to 7. Without exception, every time that an update/upgrade was required, it was painful and failure prone. All that one need do is visit the Micro$oft user forums to see the horror stories from users trying to apply updates. On the other hand, when #GNU #Linux came on the scene, I thought that I had made it to sysadmin heaven, especially with the advent of #Debian based distros. Such a joy to do system updates and upgrades! By the time that I had retired from a #geophysics group in #EarthSciences at Memorial University of #Newfoundland (#MUN), I had a flock of very happy faculty researchers, who were in love with the research software that they could get for free, meaning that their research grants could be spent on more important things.

I bought a pack of sidewalk chalks and am planning to #draw a few Gnus and Tuxes at various nearby places to get people interested (is it #legal? Children do it all the time, right?).

I'm not a lawyer, but I think as long as it can be washed away with a little water (i. e. rain), it should be okay. Maybe check with your local administration first, just to be on the safe side.

Chalk art will definitely be OK, I'm just not sure about "promotional" art, even if it's for free, non-profit organisation, I'd like to be sure here.

I bought my first PC in 2003 and I was completely lame in use it, but after two years I decided I'm ready to try linux :) I bought some #linux magazine with #Mandrake_Linux CDs and tutorial and I successfully installed Mandrake Linux next to my #Windows_XP. Since then Windows was using only by my daughter to play games and after few years I removed it completely from my PC. Through these years I've tried #Mandriva with #KDE, #Open_Suse, #Sabayon (on my daughter notebook), #Ubuntu - first with #KDE, then #Gnome, short time #E17. Then I've tried #Mint with #Cinnamon. Now I'm using #Debian_testing with #XFCE for a four years now.
My family first had no choice, they had to use linux because I'm only IT in home ;) (IT is exaggeration - I'm just user). But now they wouldn't be back to Windows at all. In our house #Debian rules :) On my new PC (I hope I'll buy it soon) there will be Debian too, but maybe I'll try #Mate. And I also think about two linux distribution next to each other. Maybe #Bodhi_Linux.
Cool idea with this chalk :)

@splendorsolis@diaspora.xpr.pl nice to read this, thank you for sharing :) Maybe we could make a world-wide event with the chalks if @Free Software Foundation supported it... just thinking aloud :D

I'm pretty good at chalk art! When Worldwide Promote Linux With Chalk Art Day arrives, I'll be ready!
