The GUID had already been there, it was possible to find the GUID in the JSON content manually and it was possible to refer a post by the GUID. GUID was always used as a way to identify a post among all distributed pods - the same post always has the same unique GUID on each pod it federated, while database ID is local and specific for each pod.

GUID usage in permalink allows users to make a pod independent link to a post in comments or other posts. Other users will always be possible to follow the link on any pod, while the local link with the local database ID may be closed and unavailable for other pods users. It was in GitHub issues for a long time and it's great to have it finally.

It sounds like a great feature. I'm totally ok with the concept. It's the name itself that makes me itch.

It's called guid in diaspora since the beginning, so the name did never change.

GIUDs have been used for about 5 years; it just wasn't the default in links to posts and people. Now it'll be easier to share posts and profiles across pods!

THX for the new release. Just a short question: do I have to activate the GUID somewhere? Because my pod still uses ID running on 0.6.6.0

It's activated by default (and you can't deactivate it), see #7453 for more details which links have the GUID now.
